The Lab of Applied Social Science and Social Work, Dep. of Social Work, and the International Relations Office of the Hellenic Mediterranean University, Crete, Greece will host the “Therapeutic Assessment In clinical practice” dual training event all the way from Michigan University, USA.
- A Lecture and discussion will be held online in zoom at October 12, 2023, from 5 pm to 8 pm. This lecture will describe the importance of and need for therapeutic assessment, trauma informed assessment, and narrative interviewing in clinical practice as part of client centered care. The objectives of the lecture are to:
- Learn about the value of qualitative assessment as an intake method used in combination with other routine assessment methods.
- Explain how client self-awareness can promote therapeutic engagement and goal setting.
- Explain how deep listening to clients’ stories creates a shared database for treatment planning and goal setting.
- Describe how therapeutic qualitative assessment is a part of trauma informed practice, emphasizing client control, humanistic empowerment, and meaning centered focus, while avoiding retraumatization.
- The Training in the Clinical Ethnographic Narrative Interview (CENI) will be held on October 13 and 14, 2023 from 9 am to 4 pm. This program will train researchers and practitioners in the use of the Clinical Ethnographic Narrative Interview (CENI), which is a powerful tool that gathers important qualitative assessment information, mobilizes help seeking, and promotes self-awareness. The CENI can also facilitate clinical actions such as goal setting and treatment planning. The CENI can be used with people who have people who have experienced trauma and loss, people with disabilities, and people from diverse cultural backgrounds. The objectives of the lecture are to:
- Learn about the use of the CENI to illuminate culture, help seeking barriers and facilitators, and to provide a safe way to help trauma survivors explain their feelings and needs.
- Receive and give the CENI interview in a structured and facilitated space
- Describe how therapeutic qualitative assessment is a part of trauma informed practice, emphasizing client control, humanistic empowerment, and meaning centered focus, while avoiding retraumatization.
- Discuss how to use of the CENI as a therapeutic trauma informed assessment in your clinical setting
- Discuss clinical and research application of the use of the CENI.
Facilator of the both is Professor Denise Saint Arnault is a faculty at the University of Michigan, USA. She is a Psychiatric Nurse and a Medical Anthropologist whose research has focused on culture, gender and help seeking in a variety of clinical problems including mental health as well as social and physical challenges. She has provided training, consultation and support for research teams and clinicians in over 15 countries and is the founder and director of the Multicultural Study of Trauma Recovery (MiStory). She created the CENI and authored the book Clinical Ethnographic Narrative Interviewing: Illuminating Culture and Meaning.
